A virtual dental consultation is a remote evaluation by a licensed dentist — either asynchronous (you send photos and symptom details, a dentist reviews within 24 hours) or synchronous (live video with a dentist, scheduled or urgent). Both formats are standard teledentistry modalities recognized by the American Dental Association and billed under CDT codes D9995 and D9996.
What they can do: identify most common dental problems from photos and symptom descriptions — suspected caries, gum disease, abscess, broken fillings or crowns, orthodontic concerns, post-procedure follow-up. Provide guidance on whether you need in-person care, urgent care, or can manage at home. E-prescribe antibiotics or pain medications where clinically appropriate and legally permitted in your state. Give you a specific next step.
What they can't do: replace a physical exam when one is clinically indicated. Perform actual dental procedures. Take new x-rays. Provide emergency care for severe facial swelling, breathing difficulties, or trauma — those require an ER.
